The NHL’s Frozen Frenzy returns Tuesday, Oct. 13, with all 32 clubs playing on the same evening. Sixteen games, staggered start times, and continuous national coverage will give fans an unusually quick look at the league’s early-season contenders, problems, surprises, and emerging stars.
The previous edition delivered 109 goals in 16 contests. Road teams finished 9-6-1, while five matchups required overtime or a shootout, setting a high bar for another fast-moving night of hockey.
ESPN’s featured schedule begins with a 6 p.m. ET meeting between the New Jersey Devils and Detroit Red Wings. The Colorado Avalanche visit the Dallas Stars at 8:30 p.m. ET, followed by the Boston Bruins against the San Jose Sharks at 11 p.m. ET.
Fans can follow the remaining games through NHL Power Play on the ESPN App, where the staggered schedule makes it possible to move between live contests. John Buccigross and Kevin Weekes will also lead five hours of whip-around coverage on ESPN2, Disney+, and the ESPN App.
| Featured matchup | Start time | Main storyline |
|---|---|---|
| New Jersey at Detroit | 6 p.m. ET | Dylan Larkin’s turbulent relationship with the Red Wings |
| Colorado at Dallas | 8:30 p.m. ET | Western Conference pressure and Jason Robertson’s future |
| Boston at San Jose | 11 p.m. ET | David Pastrnak’s leadership and Macklin Celebrini’s production |
Boston enters the night with David Pastrnak as the 28th captain in franchise history. The winger has recorded four consecutive 100-point seasons since 2022-23, collecting 436 points and 254 goals in 329 games. Pavel Zacha, the Bruins’ next-highest scorer during that stretch, trails him by 206 points.
Detroit’s biggest storyline centres on Dylan Larkin. The captain requested a trade with five years remaining on his contract, and the club removed him from the captaincy after his return. Support at home has been harsh—even while he was injured and wearing street clothes—although Montreal supporters later greeted him with chants of “We want Larkin!”
Several other Atlantic Division games bring their own complications. Buffalo faces Montreal after Alex Newhook’s Game 7 overtime winner eliminated the Sabres last spring. Florida has placed Matthew and Brady Tkachuk together on a line with Sam Bennett, while Aleksander Barkov and Brad Marchand remain unavailable. Tampa Bay’s Nikita Kucherov, fresh from his second Hart Trophy, faces the Rangers after New York’s 5-1 opening-night win.
Toronto is also watching the development of 18-year-old Gavin McKenna. After a quiet first appearance, the young forward responded with four points in his next three games.
The defending champion Carolina Hurricanes have taken 11 of a possible 14 points to start the campaign. Sebastian Aho has supplied six goals and five assists, and Carolina’s only regulation defeat came against Washington—the same opponent scheduled for Frenzy night.
The Rangers suffered a major setback when Igor Shesterkin sustained a season-ending knee injury after five games. Twenty-four-year-old Dylan Garand now takes over in goal, adding another layer of uncertainty to New York’s season.
Philadelphia’s start has been even more difficult. The Flyers opened 0-7 and have already heard supporters call for coach Rick Tocchet’s dismissal before hosting Seattle. In Washington, the evening carries a more emotional tone: Alex Ovechkin has confirmed that this will be his final season with the Capitals, and the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer has already opened his campaign with a goal.
Winnipeg must manage without suspended goaltender Connor Hellebuyck and will rely on Stuart Skinner, who owns a .920 save percentage. Elias Pettersson has provided Vancouver with optimism through eight points in seven games, while Dallas continues to evaluate pending unrestricted free agent Jason Robertson as he plays for a significant new contract.
The Frozen Frenzy compresses the league’s biggest questions into one crowded schedule. From Pastrnak’s new role and Ovechkin’s farewell season to injury concerns, contract auditions, and young stars chasing history, every game offers a reason to keep watching.
With 16 matchups unfolding across the same evening, the event is designed for constant movement rather than a single featured result. Fans who embrace the chaos will get a rapid snapshot of the 2026-27 NHL season.
