We caught up with Marcin Tomala, Senior Game Designer at Yggdrasil, to find out how a football-mad world and a pantheon of Greek gods ended up sharing the same reels.
Two Obsessions, One Game
Football needs no introduction — it’s the closest thing the planet has to a universal language, especially with major tournaments dominating headlines every couple of years. But rather than churn out yet another straightforward football slot, Tomala’s team asked a different question: what happens when the Gods of Olympus crash the match?
“We try to spice our game up,” Tomala explains, “so instead of creating a classic football experience, we imagined what would happen if the Gods of Olympus entered the stadium.” The result is something looser and more playful than a typical sports title — mythology and matchday energy colliding into one light-hearted, easy-to-love experience.
Building a World You Can Hear as Well as See
Visually, the team leaned into brightness over bombast. Think expressive, cartoon-ish gods, bold colors, and effects that land like a stadium eruption every time a big win hits. It’s approachable rather than intimidating — a deliberate choice.
The audio design follows the same philosophy. Rather than picking one mood, the soundtrack straddles two: the weight and grandeur you’d expect from Olympus, layered with the buzz and chants of a packed football stadium. Epic, but never taking itself too seriously.
The Mechanic Doing the Heavy Lifting: BoltLock™
Here’s where things get interesting for anyone who actually plays slots rather than just admires the artwork. Goals of Olympus runs on Yggdrasil’s proprietary BoltLock™ mechanic, and it’s built around momentum.
Every winning spin triggers a full respin — but instead of resetting the board, it locks in progress by unlocking additional reel positions. Mechanics, math, visuals, and narrative all had to move in step, with every team involved staying in close contact throughout development to keep the final product feeling like one cohesive idea rather than a patchwork.

So what’s the hook, beyond the novelty of Zeus in shin guards? For Tomala, it comes down to a combination of fresh presentation and satisfying pacing. The rules are simple enough to grasp in a spin or two, but every play carries the sense that something bigger might be building.
